Why I’m Thankful For Running

Thanks to Kim and Zenaida for this weeks link with Tuesday Topics: Why I’m Thankful For Running.

tuesdays topics

This topic has actually been on my mind a lot lately. I’m not sure why. Maybe because I’m getting older, or it’s something I can control in a chaotic world. Whatever the reason I am truly thankful for running and here’s why.

I can do hard things!

Running has proven over and over again that I can do hard things. I don’t just mean marathons, (we all know they are hard) but I’m talking getting up before most of the world to drive to a race, training for months for an event, running up (and down) hills to get faster and stronger, doing laps around a track. The list goes on. Running is hard! And I can do hard things.

It makes me feel young.

Running makes me feel young and strong. I see other people my age (or younger) that struggle to walk up a hill or a flight of stairs. Running has prepared me for the endurance needed as I get older.

I’m stronger for other fun activities.

I love to cycle with my sister and I know that I’ll be able to hold my own even if I haven’t been on my bike for months because of my running. My nether region might not be happy but my legs and lungs will be fine. Thanks running!

A big confidence boost!

Brings me back to I can do hard things, but there’s nothing like running to boost ones confidence. This comes from someone who is basically uncoordinated and clumsy. Running is something I can do and feel confident. Sure I have tripped and fallen a few times (okay a lot of times) but it’s all good, I know I got this.

Thanks running. You’ve made me a better person in so many ways.

Has running changed your life in ways that makes you thankful?

Thanks for reading!

Keep running my friends!

Running has been my therapy for so many years! It’s also my confidence booster, my calorie burner, my fountain of youth, my entertainment…

It’s all those things and many more. 🙂

I’m a clumsy and very uncoordinated person, too, but running doesn’t care, LOL. You know I’ve really gotten into cycling in recent years, so I agree that running has really made that discipline much “easier” than if I weren’t a runner. The same goes for cycling making me a stronger runner. I love being able to do hard things, too 😉

      Haha, no running doesn’t care.
I did a long ride today and my legs ached by the end. Makes me wonder how they would’ve felt without my running background.

Running definitely helps to slow down the ageing process. I’m 53 and I feel fitter than I was at 25.
The older I get, the more important my fitness regime seems to become. It’s definitely worth the time and effort!

It is so worth the time and effort. It’s difficult to comprehend how some people don’t see that.

Confidence seems like the #1 thing most people mention — and I agree! And I live with someone who already struggles to do things. It does bother me that he won’t take better care of himself, but I have to remind myself (all the time) that that is his journey. Although the reason it bothers me is that his journey effects mine, LOL!

Funny, I don’t really think of running as a way to feel younger, although I know a lot of people do. I guess it’s because I’m the baby of the family, and age has never really bothered me. yet, anyway!

I too live with someone who is not as active as I would like him to be. I need him to be able to keep up with me as we age, because yes that does effect my journey.

I age with all you mentioned. Especially that we can do hard things. Running is hard. All distances.

And yes I feel younger because I run. I often can compete with runners half age. Then again older ones can kick my butt too.

Mine too. I by no means meant to imply I am faster or better than all younger or older women, but some for sure. 😉

I started running 5 years ago and it was life-changing – it gave me so much confidence, it showed me that I can do very hard things and alongside everything you’ve said, the hard thing can sometimes just be getting up in the morning for a run even if I have a million and one things to do that day; and it’s brought me this connection with so many like-minded individuals in my town but also around the world.

    • Denise | 24th Nov 21

That’s one thing I failed to mention, the connection with so many like-minded people. I love that and am so thankful for it.

Totally agree with all of your reasons, especially about it giving me a confidence boost. After I ran my first marathon, I really felt like I could do anything if I put my mind to it!

    • Denise | 25th Nov 21

A marathon can definitely make you feel like a rock star!

I agree with everything you wrote here. Running is always there for me. I look forward to it (though sometimes I don’t want to because I am too tired or cold) but I still get out there.
