Tuesday Topics: Fitness Gadgets

I’m linking up with Kim and Zenaida for Tuesdays Topics. This weeks topic is “What are some new fitness gadgets you’d like to try”. tuesdays topics

My first thought was there really aren’t any fitness gadgets I want. I’m actually trying to simplify my running and I already have all the basics that I “need”. I have a Garmin watch, Jaybird earbuds, a Stick and a Foam roller (both of which I rarely use), SPIbelt, Fuelbelt (although I do need a new one) and technically the last four aren’t even gadgets. So I googled The best fitness gadgets for 2019 to see if there was something that I didn’t realize I needed. 😉

This is what I found:

fitbit atria 2 smart scale
Fitbit Atria 2 smart scale $130

~The device obviously functions as a scale, but in addition to measuring weight it can also track an athletes percentage of body fat and calculate BMI too. The smart scale can store profiles for up to eight individuals, keeping each of the users’ data private and separate from one another. That information syncs wirelessly with a smartphone, which can be used to track trends, displaying charts and graphs that provide a clearer picture of weight loss and overall health as a result.~

I don’t need charts and graphs to show me I have too much body fat. I’m going to pass on this one.

Next please…

ifit sleep tracker
iFit Sleep HR Sleep Tracker ($119)

~…a small disc that pairs with a smartphone and slides between the mattress and boxspring on the user’s bed. It then records a wide variety of sleep metrics for the individual, relaying the data to their phone for review in the morning. The Sleep HR can tell you how much REM sleep you got the night before, how many times you woke up in the night, and just how restful you were in general. It does this by tracking heart and respiratory rate, while learning the user’s sleep patterns, helping to generate data on sleep trends over time.~

I already know I wake up A LOT during the night, and I know when I have had a restful sleep because I feel rested, duh. I’m not sure how this helps. Maybe give me something that helps me sleep throughout the whole night…like Benadryl. I think I’ll pass on this one too.

Next…

powerdot muscle stimulator
PowerDot Electrical Muscle Stimulator ($199)

~This small and lightweight portable electric muscle stimulator provides therapy for your tired muscles and aching joints no matter where you go. Athletes simply apply the PowerDot pads to the area of the body most in need of attention, and use their smartphone to control the level of stimulation.~

Okay, this one I might actually use, especially since I’m so bad at using my Stick or Foam roller. Or maybe I wouldn’t use it because I am already so bad at using my Stick and Foam roller. Ugh! For nearly 200 bucks I think I’ll pass…for now.

Onward…

Vyper 2 Vibrating Fitness Roller ($199)

~adds a new dimension to the tried-and-true foam roller by adding the ability to vibrate at the same time.~

If I used my Foam roller faithfully I might invest in this one because it sounds like it would feel amazing, but once again I can’t justify buying a $200 Foam roller knowing it will be sitting in a corner all alone (well, with my Stick). Having said that, I can see why athletes that use their Foam roller might want this.

And then there’s this…

Masimo iSpO2 Pulse Oximeter ($250)

~For serious athletes…to measure aerobic efficiency~

I wouldn’t call myself a serious athlete and I’m pretty sure my red face says I am getting plenty of oxygen. Besides I know you can get a pulse oximeter on Amazon for about $20, it won’t upload data to your phone but what data do you get other than o2 saturation and heartrate anyhow? For 250 bucks this is definitely a hard pass for me.

I am going to skip giving the rundown on the next two because you see where this is going, but here they are if you choose to research them.

Skulpt Performance Training System ($99)

Theragun G2Pro ($400)

It seems like I have everything I need, but maybe you found something on this list that you can’t live without. Just so there is no misunderstanding, I haven’t tried any of these gadgets so I honestly don’t know if they work or not. I’m just giving my opinion based on their description and whether or not I would try them.

Have you tried any of these things? Do you feel the need to have the latest gadget?

Thank for reading!

I am with you as far as simplifying my running goes. I think of myself as a minimalist, but maybe I’m just cheap! 🙂 I don’t even carry a phone when I run.

    • Denise | 23rd Apr 19

I’m always surprised when someone tells me they don’t carry their phone. I went for a quick run the other morning without my phone and I felt lost.
I think I might be cheap too. 😉 Thanks for reading!

I tried out one of those EMS machines at an expo last year and really liked it. Not sure if I would use it on a regular basis though.

    • Denise | 24th Apr 19

I wouldn’t mind trying one but like you I probably wouldn’t use it regularly.

I have a FitBit scale. Not sure if it is the same one. I mainly use it to weigh myself here and there. I don’t have a FitBit account anymore so cannot sync the data to said account. I think I would like the PowerDot!

    • Denise | 24th Apr 19

Yeah, that PowerDot thing seems pretty cool.

I’m not much of a fitness gadget gal. I have a very basic Garmin, and it gives me all the info I need. And I have an old school IPod, that will soon need replacing (except they don’t make them anymore, so I’ll have to find something similar or pay $$$ for any remaining ones on ebay). First world probs, right? 😉

Do you run with your phone? I have my music, audiobooks and podcasts on my phone. My Garmin is the one thing I upgrade every few years, but I usually get one on Ebay.

I think my comment got lost…so here’s my second attempt. I’m not a gadget gal , either. My very basic Garmin serves me quite well, and my old Ipod is awesome (but will soon need replacing…if I can find one…).

I got your first comment but thanks for taking the time to try again. Sorry if my site had a glitch.

I keep things very simple too but that muscle stimulator looks like something I would try (if I had lots of spare money in the bank, LOL!)

    • Denise | 24th Apr 19

Seriously! None of these gadgets come cheap.

  7. kookyrunner | 24th Apr 19

I am definitely interested in that FitBit scale! I bet it can give you so much information!

    • Denise | 24th Apr 19

I rarely weigh myself, but I guess it would be interesting to see what information it could give you. If you get one I’d like to hear your opinion on it.

I like your take on things LOL, it seems like a lot of these gadgets aren’t necessary, but helps you take things to the next level (if you can afford it)! I never heard of a vibrating foam roller, very interesting!

    • Denise | 24th Apr 19

I guess I’m not at that level. 😉 Thanks for reading.

I love gadgets but since I don’t DO anything with the data, I really don’t need them. Still, I ear my Garmin 24/7 ….

    • Denise | 24th Apr 19

I wear my Garmin 24/7 too, and don’t really do anything with the data either. :-/
