Music Monday: Foo Fighters Has a Dark Side

Welcome to Music Monday! This weeks song is a little dark but I feel like it speaks to 2020. When I researched it and tried to find the meaning behind the lyrics the only thing I could find was other people’s interpretations. Heck I can do that. Dave  Grohl did speak about the meaning behind the video in an interview, saying it came from a dark dream he had as a kid but he never really said what the lyrics meant to him.

I’ve never been a huge Foo Fighters fan but I did watch a mini documentary with Dave Grohl which gave me a new appreciation of his talents. Dave started out as the drummer for Nirvana but then formed his own band (Foo Fighters) after the death of Kurt Cobain in 1994. His band has won 12 Grammys (where the heck have I been?) with best rock album four times and two MTV music awards for best music video. Do people still watch MTV and music videos?

Anyhow, I do like this song. It has a catchy beat that I think will be good to run to. As for the lyrics I think it speaks to the loneliness during the pandemic. I could be wrong but that’s what it means to me.

If you want to
I’ll make you feel something real just to bother you
Now I got you
Under my thumb like a drug, I will smother you
I’ll be the one, be the moon, be the sun
Be the rain in your song, go put that record on
If you want to
I’ll be the one, be the tongue that will swallow you
Shame, shame, shame, shame
Shame, shame, shame, shame
Another splinter under the skin
Another season of loneliness
I found a reason and buried it
Beneath the mountain of emptiness…

Are you a Foo Fighters fan? Have you ever found meaning in a song to later find out it meant something completely different? Do you even look for meanings in the lyrics?

Thanks for reading! Keep running my friends!

Well yes that has happened to me and my kids tell me what the song really means!

I tend to notice the music before the lyrics then sometimes realize I don’t like what the song means.

I love the Foo Fighters–a lot of their songs make it onto my running playlists. Did you see that video drum challenge he was in with a young girl from London? She’s crazy talented and it was really entertaining to watch them try to outdo each other!

I haven’t seen the drum challenge but I will look for it. He’s so talented and sees like a genuinely nice guy.
