Spring Runfessions: April 2022

It’s the end of April which means Marcia has opened the Runfessional for us runners to cleanse our soles. It’s always refreshing to start a new month with a clean slate so let’s get to it.

I runfess that I haven’t been blogging much lately and I can’t pinpoint why. I have 3 posts started but then get bored and lose interest. Am I depressed? I’ve never been depressed before so why would I be now? Who knows. I recently had a physical and the NP asked if I have lost joy in doing the things I normally enjoy and I said no but is this what she meant? Maybe it’s hormones. Everything seems to be hormone related at my age. Ugh.

Speaking of my age I runfess that I have gained about 3 to 5 pounds recently depending on the day. What’s up with that? I rarely weigh myself but me and a couple coworkers weighed the other day and I was shocked to see the number on the scale. This is the heaviest I’ve ever been and I refuse to go up a size in my jeans.

Ironically, I runfess that I actually feel better physically than I have in a while. I have added Pilates to my fitness routine which has improved my balance, mobility and strength. I also go to the gym once or twice a week with my hubby and use the machines. So does muscle really weigh more than fat? I’m hoping so. Lol.

Lastly, my daughter started running about a month ago and I runfess that it was hard to hold back my enthusiasm at first because I didn’t want to scare her off (don’t make eye contact) but she’s doing great and I think invested now. I also runfess  that I had to make a conscious effort not to buy her all things running.

Well that’s about it for me. What do you have to runfess?

Thanks for reading!

That is fun that your daughter started running again. Maybe your excitement around that will snap you out of your funk

I was thinking the same thing. I hope so. You always look so happy and put together, I need whatever is in your water. 😉

LOL on having to hide your enthusiasm and not make eye contact! It’s a delicate balance with kids. I’m not depressed, but I feel like I’m still battling covid-era malaise.

The after effects of Covid is no joke. Hopefully you’ll get your energy back soon.

Yay for your daughter! My youngest daughter, on occasion, will do a quick mile, but usually more as a warm-up before a strength workout. The same for the son… but he’s been bitten by the fitness bug & is working almost daily (fingers crossed he expands on his running a bit). He swam in HS & at his CC before he transferred to Iowa. He’s working now, but I keep suggesting he should consider training a tri in his free time 🙂

She’s also “just” doing a mile but says she’s going to add another soon. And she works out with a fitness app too.
I agree that your son should do a tri. If he’s a swimmer than he’s got the hard part done. 😊

Hooray for your daughter! I’d feel the same way: THRILLED! But I know I’d have to curb my enthusiasm. Haha! My older daughter always texts me when she runs. I think she knows it brings me joy! I’d definitely say that added weight is muscle!

My daughter always tells me about her run. I love having this in common now.

I definitely vote that your weight gain is muscle. But the important thing is, you said you’re feeling really good physically, so who cares about a few pounds? (although- I also would not want to have to go out and buy new jeans.)
Oh, I wish my daughter would run! So far neither of my kids is into running, but she’s only 13 and I think there’s still hope. It would be so good for her.
Ha ha… love the dog on the scale. Yes, it’s the collar!

There’s definitely still time. My daughter is 24. Next is the bike. She has expressed interest in riding with me so 🤞🏻🤞🏻

I would be over the moon if my stepson started to run again. He ran in HS. Sadly,,, NO!

I write my posts way way ahead… otherwise they would never get done.

    I don’t have a scale and I haven’t really worn real clothes… that’s the real test.

    • Denise | 1st May 22

Yes it is. I’ve been living in joggers at home and scrubs at work…they are both very forgiving. I had to squeeze myself into a pair of jeans the other day and I was not happy. 😂

I’m a little worried about wearing work clothes again. It’s been over two years.

I also have my days when I am not motivated to post. It happens. That is awesome about your daughter. Maybe one day you’l both do a race together. No one else in my family runs (cousins, nieces, nephews).

My daughter has done a couple 5k’s and a couple mud runs with me but without any training. She was a dancer all through school so she was fit, now she’s running and working out to keep that fitness. Yay!

That’s awesome that your daughter is running — and you haven’t scared her yet, LOL!

Weight has been a battle my whole life. It can vary wildly, and so it can depend on whether or not you’re weighing the same time every day. And on a whole lot of other things too!

I have a tendency to go hot & heavy with stuff and then burn out. Lather, rinse, repeat. Although sometimes I’ve noticed we lose our joy as we get older. I still enjoy much of what I do, but there are also other things I want to make time for & never seem to be able to!

    • Denise | 2nd May 22

My weight has been the same for so long, it’s not usually an issue. I don’t make a practice of weighing myself, I usually judge my weight by how my clothes feel but considering I’ve been living in joggers and scrubs I thought I’d just check in. I know I shouldn’t let the number get to me but I’m also feeling a little pudgy. Ugh.
I think my joy is shifting, if that makes sense.

Oh, Denise, I feel you on the weight gain and everything else. I am the heaviest I’ve ever been as well–and it’s only about 5 pounds from where I’d like to be. I feel like it’s distributed differently, though, and I finally relented, going up a size in pants. I’ve never had issues with my weight, so this has definitely been a challenge. I guess I should give up my daily wine?

    • Denise | 2nd May 22

I’ve never had weight issues either and have been the same weight for so long. Five pounds is a lot for someone our size but I see your posts and you look great, your wt is definitely muscle! I wouldn’t give up the wine. 😉
