Runners Need To Run

This is a late post because it’s been a long day. There’s an update at the end, so read to the end to see how it all turned out. πŸ™‚

Running is a blessing. Walking is a blessing. Any movement whatsoever is a blessing. We should all be thankful if we are healthy and able to run. I’ve always said that I run because I can. Well that came to a screeching halt on Monday when I woke up with debilitating back pain. What does a runner do when they can’t run? Wallow in self pity. Worry. Cry. Formulate an action plan.

When a runner can’t run, it’s no fun.

Let me first explain what’s happening then I’ll tell you how this runner is dealing with it. I’m pretty sure it all started on Saturday when I washed my two German Shepherds. My back usually hurts a little after bending over washing my dogs but this time I was a little extra sore. I went on to my granddaughters soccer game (she scored a goal!) and had twinges of pain when getting up from sitting but nothing a good nights sleep and some ice wouldn’t fix…or so I thought.

The pain got progressively worse on Sunday even after Advil and sitting in the hot tub. By the evening I was having trouble walking. No worries, I would be better in the morning. Well morning came and I ended up on my knees with severe spasms when I attempted to make my bed. I was scheduled to work at the college but there was no way, fortunately I was able to get someone to cover for me. I rarely call out sick so this was just adding to an already stressful situation.

My initial thoughts…

  • How am I going to run?
  • What if I can’t run?
  • How’s is this going to impact my training for Boston?
  • What if I can’t run Boston?
  • I don’t want to disappoint anyone.

This was all in the first 10 minutes of getting out of bed. Things only got worse throughout the day with spasms, frustration and tears. Tears from pain and self pity.

My action plan…

  • Ice, Advil and rest.

By 10 am I was at my wits end. I mean seriously, it had been 4 hours and I wasn’t feeling even a little bit better. Wtf? This is not who I am. I need to feel better. (A bit irrational but what can I say) A friend suggested a chiropractor and I was feeling desperate (I don’t believe in chiropractors as a rule because I’ve seen too many patients after visiting one) so I called my sisters chiropractor and added to my plan.

  • Visit a chiropractor.

I didn’t feel any better after the visit but did have some relief when he used the Rapid Tension Relief (RTR)gun. He also  gave me some peace of mind by explaining the cause of the pain. I have a strained L5 ligament. It’s nothing permanent, YAY! His recommendation: yoga (child’s pose and cobra pose) and ice. Also use my abs (what abs? I have quads. Ugh) and move my legs (similar to baby butterflies) to activate muscles when I want to get up or change position. Recheck on Thursday.

  • Yoga

I know how important yoga is for runners. I do. Do I practice yoga like I should? No. Will I now? Yes. Will I forget this pain in a few weeks then slack off with yoga? Maybe, but I’m going to try to treat my body better.

I did a child’s pose (felt okay) then attempted cobra but ended up face down on my mat unable to move. It took me 10 mins to get up off the floor. I thought my daughter was the only one home and didn’t want to call her for help because no one needs to see their mother like that. Turns out my husband sent her to the store and he was home. Eye roll.

Day 2…when will the pain end?

In the recliner with ice and heat as the plan continues…

  • Massage

That RTR gun really felt good so I’m hoping a massage will loosen those tight muscles that keep spasming. Idk. I guess I’ll find out. Waiting on my husband to take me because I’m afraid to drive…not sure I even can.

  • Essential oils

Did I say I’m willing to try anything? I read eucalyptus oil can help ease muscle pain, tension and swelling. Any thoughts on that?

My sister texted me yesterday and said to avoid inflammatory foods and drink celery juice. Honestly I think I’m way past that. Maybe as a maintenance plan but not an immediate relief plan. Thanks though Sista!

My final thoughts…

  • Running doesn’t define who I am. Well actually it does, but I’m also a mom, wife, meemaw and nurse.
  • This shall pass. It better! And soon!
  • Yoga needs to be a regular part of my life.

Have you ever had back pain that kept you from running?

Do you try alternative medicine for injuries?

Update: I broke down and went to the ER. I couldn’t handle the spasms any longer. I truly have never had such bad pain before (and I have 2 kids).  I was given and shot of Toradol, Tylenol and Valuim. I was able to walk out of the ER 2 1/2 hours later and shower when I got home. I feel so  much better. I’m hoping I’ll feel normal again tomorrow. Fingers crossed. πŸ™‚

Thanks for reading.

Run a few miles for me this week.

ugh so sorry back pain is the worst. While I’ve not had anything like you describe, I have pulled things before while picking up something the wrong way. I find relief by alternating ice and heat. Hope you feel better soon! PS Boston is a long time away no need to stress about that yet

I have never had this kind of pain before either and come to find out I’m a wimp. Besides the fact it’s killing me to sit still for so long.
You’re right about Boston but it remains in the back of my mind. πŸ˜‰

Oh that sounds so painful – so sorry that you have to deal with this, but I’m glad that the treatment you received at the ER is helping!

Thanks Kim. Thank goodness for Valium. Truly mothers little helper. Lol. Hoping this is the last day I will need it.

Oh UGH!!!!! Thankfully, I don’t have back issues very often, but when I do? UGH. I wish I could say I feel your pain, but that would be insulting because it sounds much severe than I’ve ever experienced. Glad to hear the ER was successful, though. I hope things rebound as quickly as they appeared. Have you tried foam rolling? It may be difficult to get down on the floor (and/or back up), but maybe your hubby could help rub the roller (gently) along your back (?) .

This is the worse pain I have ever experienced too. I thought of foam rolling but you’re right, getting up off the floor defeats the purpose of getting down there in the first place. UGH.
I’m not encouraging Valium use but it sure has helped relax my muscles. I have an appointment for a massage on Friday. Fingers crossed.

I hurt my back a few years ago. It was so bad that I couldn’t even tie my shoes. I thank my chiropractor for everything to help me get better. I hope you feel better soon!

I know people who swear by chiropractors. I’m still not convinced but I think I was in too much pain to really benefit from it. Maybe I’ll try again at a better time. Thanks for the well wishes! πŸ™‚

Yes, try it again. Give it time and you will get better.

Patience is not my strong suit. LOL

Oh wow. I’ve had back pain but nothing even close to what you describe. I do believe that the universe sends you messages. I think it was smart to take the “more yoga” cue. I need to follow your lead on that front. It’s so darn easy to slack off and just run. Glad you’re feeling better and I hope it stays that way!

This is the first time my back has ever felt like this–and hopefully the last. I’m bringing my yoga mat to the college so I can do some poses on my down time. Maybe I’ll start a trend at the clinic. Lol

So far, knock on wood, I don’t normally have anything like that. But I have friends & family that do. Back woes really travel in my family, and I know that that’s a misery.

Yoga is good, but you still have to pay attention to your body. Cobra is very good for strengthening the low back, probably too much when you’re actively having spasms. In addition to child’s pose, I’d suggest knee to chest — but gently and only if there is absolutely NO PAIN. It’s the first rule of yoga — if it hurts, don’t do that. Cat & cow — again, very gently — should feel really good, too.

I hope by now you’re feeling a lot better. And you are right: running is what we do, not who we are. I haven’t been able to run all week and nothing to do with physical pain. Yes, this too shall pass.

    • Denise | 4th Oct 19

Thanks so much for the advise. I have been doing the knee to chest–gently. Yeah cobra was a no go, but a definite a go to when I’m back to my old self.
I am feeling better. Yesterday was the first day without spasms, until I was walking to bed but even then it wasn’t the worse.
Thanks for your concern and words of wisdom. πŸ™‚

Sitting on my heating pad as I respond to this. I have SI joint issues and mine is aggravated right now. I had a massage last week and I’m doing cobra and all the things. I hope you’re feeling better!

    • Denise | 4th Oct 19

Thanks Wendy. I didn’t go for a massage when I wrote the post because I was in too much pain but I did go today and while it felt good at the time I struggled getting off the table and walking to my car.
Now that you mention it my pain may very well be an SI joint issue. Either way I’m over it. Hope yours is better too.
