As many of you already know I’ve been running for a long time. I have always enjoyed being outside and I LOVE the sun. I’m from the generation of sun worshippers who laid out in the sun for hours covered in baby oil hoping to fry to a dark brown. There was no sunscreen then because we didn’t know about skin cancer and sun damage.
I have spent a zillion hours in the sun either on my bike or running on the sunny streets of southern California. I rarely gave a second thought about “too much” sun until I was in my 30’s but by then the damage was done. Since then I have tried to protect myself from further damage and now want to remind my friends, young and old, to protect themselves.
I hope this post serves as a reminder to protect yourself. When you’re young you don’t think about sun damage or worse, skin cancer, but they both are very real, and it is so easy to protect yourself from them. There is no excuse with sunscreen in make-up and UV protection in clothing. Start using them now, don’t wait until you have sun spots and crepe skin. π
I’m linking with Kim and Zenaida for Tuesday topics. Take a minute to visit them as well.
Summer running is hard. Itβs right up there with running in the wind…
Iβve been listening to audio books and podcasts on most of my runs lately…

Great advice. Sadly, I still like to get a little color when I’m out in the sun.
Denise | 19th Apr 19
I still get color no matter how much sunscreen I apply and I still associate being tan with looking healthy.

I always wear a hat and sunglasses when I run outside. I’m all about protecting my skin from the sun!

Good to hear! Sometimes dark skinned people think they don’t need sunscreen but while your melanoma risk may be less there’s still a risk. As for sun damage, well you probably know the saying…;-)

Thanks for the reminder now that it is finally warming up and getting some sun here. I do run with a hat on sunny days and wear sunscreen as well. I will be going soon to Target to buy one for my race and one for my body.

I just bought Thinksun for my face on Amazon. I haven’t tried it yet but I like Thinksport for my arms so assume I’ll like it the same.

I’m from Botswana so I’m so conscious of protecting myself when I run. We usually start out really early for our long runs to avoid as much of the sun as we can. I’ve struggled to find a good pair of sunglasses but that’s next on my shopping list.

Yeah, when we spend a lot of time on the road, early is definitely the way to go. Check out Kookyrunner’s recent post for some good looking sunglasses.

I really regret all sun I got as a teen. I have lots of brown spots on my face and have had a few things taken off. I am really trying to be better w my sunscreen

When you’re young you feel invincible, then you “grow up” and spots appear. π

Great words of wisdom! While I did not use baby oil as a teenager, I didn’t wear sunscreen very often either. I do run very early and seek out shaded routes as well as always wear a hat/sunglasses and sunscreen on my face. I could do better with the rest of my body though.

I don’t always remember my neck and legs but my arms and face get sunscreen even when I’m not running. Thanks for reading! π
