May-grey is over…Yay! June’s Coffee Break Update

It’s the first Saturday of the month (with no June-gloom in the forecast) and time for virtual coffee with our hosts Coco and Deborah. So pull up a chair and grab a coffee or other beverage of your choice and join us for a quick chat. Remember to share the love by visiting a few blogs and as always send some love to our hosts.

the ultimate coffee date

If we were having coffee I would share with you how I switched my Revel Big Bear half marathon to the full marathon. As some of you may know I have been on the fence about this  but I decided I have to go for it! I also joined the Revel Marathon online training program. I started in the middle of week 20 which puts me behind but I’m just going to jump right in and start putting in the miles. This weeks long run is 14 miles! Wish me luck. 😉

If we were having coffee I would tell you about my husbands “new” old car. He recently bought a 1941 Ford Sedan Delivery. He is in heaven. And he got it just in time to keep him busy while I train for a marathon. Now I won’t feel like my long runs interfere with our time together.

Todd's Ford 1941
This was before he brought it home and washed it. He would be horrified if he knew I posted a pic of it dirty. 😀

Did I mention that someone else likes the new car too?

Ford the opossum
Meet Ford the Possum

He nearly gave my husband a heart attack!

If we were having coffee ironically I would mention how I am considering quitting coffee. I suppose I could switch to decaf. I occasionally have palpitations and am not sure if the caffeine is contributing to it. It seems that the palpitations happen randomly but I can’t rule out caffeine being the culprit until I stop for a while. I’ve been to my PMD with complaints of palpitations, breathlessness and fatigue in the past and they either blow me off because “you are a runner, you’re fine” (runners drop dead too) or fail to ask a single question about lifestyle and tell me to exercise more (because 10 mile runs is not enough) and cut back on caffeine. I only drink 1 cup of coffee a day, with an occasional coke in the afternoon.  Any thoughts?

And lastly…

If we were having coffee I would say how I am loving Pilates and it’s total body workout. And I love that my daughter goes with me. My other daughter has been too busy rehearsing for her final 🙁 dance show and end of the year senior activities. Again 🙁

Thanks for stopping by. Hope you all have a great month! Until next time…

Keep running my friends!

That is exciting about the marathon. Hope this weekend’s long run went well! Thanks for joining us for coffee this weekend!

    • Denise | 2nd Jun 18

Thanks. The long run went okay. I’m not as tired as I thought I would be. Have a great week!

Congrats on switching from the half to the full! I think the possum would have given me a heart attach as well!

Oh, how exciting on the marathon! That is a sweet looking car! Sorry your Dr. isn’t taking your concerns seriously. Maybe switch to decaf and see if it helps? I know too much caffeine affects me, but I can have 2-3 cups in the morning. 🙂 Thanks for joining us for coffee!

Wow that’s a fun car! The possum thinks so too, obvi. 😀 I had palpitations like that (and an abnormal EKG) in my late 40’s. Because I have a strong history of heart disease in my family I was given a holter monitor (failed) stress test, stress echo (passed both of those with flying colors). The tech told me lots of middle age women come in with those symptoms.

I probably need a stress echo but I keep putting it off. 😉 I think I’m in denial about being middle-aged. Lol

Switching to the marathon is exciting! It’s really cool that your husband has a fun project to keep him occupied while you’re training. That car is awesome, even dirty & with a possum visitor.

Good luck figuring out the source of your palpitations. With so little caffeine intake, it seems unlikely to be the cause, but you are right that you can’t no for sure without eliminating it for a while.

    • Denise | 3rd Jun 18

My husband has needed a project for a while…preparing him for retirement. He can’t depend on me to entertain him. 😉

I can tell you what I know about runners who drink coffee: we have pretty low resting heart rates, which allows “escape beats” to slip through–those are the palpitations. I have them when I’m at rest. Still, if I were your PCP I wouldn’t blow it off. I’d give you an EKG and a Holter Monitor, just to make sure. But I bet you’re ok.

Good luck with your marathon training. You’ll be fine. Experience is the most valuable tool anyways!

    • Denise | 3rd Jun 18

Thanks for the heart advice. My heart rate has been as low as 37 before but I sometimes feel like I’m having short runs of V-tach. I never have chest pain when I run so that’s got to be good. 🙂

That’s exciting about the marathon! Our youngest daughter (we also have an older daughter and son) just graduated high school last weekend. We were extremely busy the past two months with her senior dance recital/solo and all those activities you mentioned as well. And, just this morning, she ran her first-ever race…a 20K! It’s crazy how fast the past year has flown by…

    • Denise | 3rd Jun 18

Wow. Congrats on the first 20k! Will she dance in college? Neither one of my girls want to continue i.e. to peruse dancing 🙁

      • Denise | 3rd Jun 18

        Pursue dancing 🙄

Good luck with the marathon! As you said, sometimes you have to go for it!

Okay that possum looks cute in the picture but if I was actually there I’d be terrified!!

Hopefully you don’t have any serious issues and backing off the caffeine will help…seems like a logical precaution to take.

    • Denise | 3rd Jun 18

      Thanks!
I completely agree about cute and terrifying!

Awesome that your husband has a project so you can have your time! I have some heart stuff- always blown off since I am sort of young, and run…I got a new doctor! Now I know (sort-of) what is wrong, and had the testing to go through eliminating what it wasn’t- that should be at the very least what your doc should do- I did have heart palpitations from lack of VIt. D…severe. It can feel terrible and once I got on a large dose, I felt so much better! Good luck~

    • Denise | 4th Jun 18

Yes, husband’s do need projects…at least mine does. 🙂
I feel i get plenty of Vit D being outside all the time but it’s time for an annual check up any how. Thanks!

Oh goodness I’ve been reading all these response about coffee and the heart. I don’t drink hot coffee but I love my iced coffee. Do you think that still applies to iced coffee since its still caffine?? Habe fun with marathon training!

    • Denise | 4th Jun 18

Yes, ice coffee has the same amount of caffeine. I wouldn’t worry though, caffeine effects everyone differently.
