Creating Your Own Quiet Space

We’ve all had a crazy year filled with stress, anxiety and uncertainty. For most of us running has been our saving grace. Our runs are a time to decompress and refocus so we can take on what is ahead of us. But running doesn’t fix all woes, we all need a quiet place to relax, reflect and recharge. Many of us know the benefits of yoga for a runners’ body but we (and by we, I mean I) don’t always make the time to do it.

Maybe all we (I) needed was a special space. I was able to use my daughters room as my quiet space after she moved out but you can make any little space your own, with a few modifications. A corner of the living room, garage, backyard or even a hallway.

Creating A Quiet Space For Yoga

  • Aromatherapy

I start here because I think it’s so important for your space be inviting and what better way than with a favorite scent. Have you ever been to a spa? What is the first thing you noticed? That wonderful relaxing smell. I love that smell!

I usually light a candle (Home Goods has so many to choose from at reasonable prices) but I also have a diffuser for essential oils and an incense burner. I find incense can be too much if you’re in an enclosed room, they might work better outside or in a bigger space.

  • Add A Little Green

Since the pandemic and being quarantined, more people have been testing out their green thumb by bringing nature inside. House plants have been proven to help clean the air by absorbing allergens and small particles through their leaves. They also absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. Study’s have shown people feel more relaxed, heal quicker and do better at work when they have plants near by. I believe it’s because plants bring nature inside and nature makes people feel good. For a list of easy to care for houseplants go here.

  • Color and Decor

I went to Pinterest for inspiration and decided on pale pink, grey and soft white for my colors. Blues and green are calming colors but pick what makes you happy. It’s your space after all. If your space is a temporarily cleared corner then maybe your yoga mat, blocks and cushion are in colors that make you happy. Gaiam is one of the many yoga suppliers to check out and they have a yoga mat for everyone. (I am not promoting them, it’s just a brand I have used and like.)

Keep it simple and uncluttered. You want enough room to move freely. I also find less is better when it comes to relaxing.

  • A Place To Sit

I put a daybed in my space because I needed a place for guests to sleep, but my original plan was floor pillows. The daybed has actually worked out better because I was able to surround it with pillows and it’s off the floor, against a window that looks over the backyard. It’s also a great place to read. If your space is solely for yoga or meditation than floor pillows or cushions might be all you need.

The daybed and bedding are from IKEA. The side table is from Home Goods. My daughter made the blanket.
  • Soothing Sounds

You might find it necessary to have some calming music or soothing sounds to drown out any outside noise or just to set the mood. There are several playlists to chose from on Spotify and YouTube.

My quiet room is a work in progress but I’m off to good start. I hope these ideas help you find your zen and motivate you to practice yoga like we all know we should.

I love that you have made this space for yourself. I also find my workout and yoga space my happy place. Just feels good to be in there

Your room looks so inviting, Denise!
That blanket that your daughter made looks amazing, by the way.
Did she buy the giant wool thread or did she also make that herself?

I love this! I would love to have a quiet room too. There is an extra room in the apartment but I already use it for my desk, a desk for my sister, and the cats’ litter boxes. I know I need a bigger place. 🙂

    • Denise | 31st Mar 21

Yeah, I think the cats’ litter boxes my mess up your zen. 😂

Can I come to your house. It’s so pretty.

I can’t complain. I have 3 extra bedrooms that are quiet. I use one for sewing, one for biking and one for work. There’s room for yoga in each if I chose to actually do it. I prefer to go to a class. There’s a bed or sofa bed in each and of course, plants!

Well it sounds like you have all the room you need., maybe I should come to your house. 😉
I would rather go to a yoga class too but I rather spend the money on Pilates and do yoga at home. I can’t do both.

      • Darlene | 31st Mar 21

I’ve never tried Pilates. I should.

It’s a good full body workout.

Oh, I love the space you’ve made! I wonder if I could make something like that happen in my bedroom. We have half a room that is totally unused, and could definitely be crafted into a quiet, yoga space.

    • Denise | 31st Mar 21

Wow, I wish I had a bedroom big enough to half that is unused. Lol. Sounds like a perfect spot for yoga.

What a great idea to make this space! I don’t really have anywhere like that. My office is where I can escape alone, but usually its to do work so not very relaxing. I’d like to make a corner in our house somewhere that is relaxing, but it just hasn’t happened yet.

    • Denise | 31st Mar 21

No time like the present. Although quiet time is a little harder to come by when you have a little one. 😉

This looks beautiful! The color scheme is awesome, and the daybed looks quite inviting 😉 Ironically, I do a lot of my yoga in a hallway. It doesn’t feel constraining, and it offers me (almost) zero distractions. We have some empty bedrooms, but all are full of clutter, otherwise I’d try to make one of them “mine.”

    • Denise | 31st Mar 21

Thanks Kim. My house is very small with one tiny hallway that’s not conducive to practicing yoga so the room works out perfect.

I need a quiet space! My son is going to college next year so I could convert his room… he won’t be too happy if I redecorate, but some of these ideas would work. Thanks for posting!

    • Denise | 31st Mar 21

Yeah, a complete redecorating isn’t necessary to make a nice quiet space.

What a wonderful space you have created for yourself! Everyone needs a space that makes them happy.

    • Denise | 31st Mar 21

I agree…obviously. We all deserve it.

My friend got me an essential oil diffuser for my birthday so I’m looking forward to testing it out. I definitely need more quiet time, especially at night.

What a beautiful space Denise! Love that chunky blanket your daughter made. I do yoga down in the pain cave. I do have an “office” that is all mine. That’s where the plants grow and essential oils are diffused. I love starting the day there with my coffee!

    • Denise | 5th Apr 21

Your “office” sounds like a comfortable place to get things done. I’m envious of your pain cave.
