Coffee Talk: January 2020

The first Saturday of the month brings The Ultimate Coffee Date with Deborah and Coco. It is one of my favorite posts because it’s a time to get to know our cyber friends a bit more. So while I decide if I’m going to run after finishing my coffee this morning I’ll share with you a little of what’s going on in my small part of the world.

Over coffee I would tell you that I am on the 4th day of a cold and I am so over it! I’m sitting here trying to decide if I am well enough for a short run (even though it is long run day). I am a firm believer in rest and fluids to get over a cold but made the mistake of doing hill repeats the other day when I thought I felt okay. I spent the rest of the day in my husbands recliner watching Animal Kingdom.

Not feeling awesome.

Which brings me to…

Is anyone watching Animal Kingdom? It’s on Amazon Prime. If you’re not, heads up…there are no lions, tigers or bears. It about a family of thieves and is filmed here in Oceanside, California. A lot of the reason I like watching it is for the location and the beach scenes. Does anyone else watch something for the scenery? It’s why I loved Big Little Lies. Who doesn’t love Monterey?

Over coffee I would tell you that I spent a couple of days with family who I rarely see. My sister, her daughters and their families were all visiting from Idaho and Montana. My nephew and his family (who live an hour away but I never see) had everyone over (and I mean everyone…friends and extended family) for dinner and drinks. What a great bunch of people.

Lunch after SD Zoo

Lastly, over coffee I would tell you about my fishless pond. My husband built a pond in our back yard less than a year ago and put in goldfish (they look like miniature koi fish), snails, crawfish and mosquito fish. We had 14 goldfish (started with 16 but 2 disappeared, never to be found) until a little over a week ago when a blue heron found our little pond. He ate 2 or 3 fish every day until they were gone. 🙁 So sad. Hopefully now that he has nothing left to eat (he ate the crawfish too) he’ll go back to the wetlands where he belongs.

That’s it for now. I’ve decided to rest one more day, or at least not run, and take my dog for a walk. I hope everyone else is healthy and been able to stay germ free during cold and flu season.

Oh, bummer that you’ve been entertaining a cold. Bummer, also, on the fish! Knock wood, I’ve avoided being sick, thus far, this winter. Hope you’re feeling better for your run!

Stupid cold! I’m better today and will be going for a run. Thanks Kim. I hope you don’t get sick. For us people who pride ourselves on being healthy it makes you feel mortal…for lack of a better word. Lol.

Thanks Deborah, I’m feeling better today. Thought I was going to get away without getting sick…darn!
I wish I could take credit for that photo, beautiful isn’t it!

My clinic has been hopping lately with flu (A and B), RSV, you name it. I try not to succumb but I had a horrible cold a few weeks ago. Pretty sure I had RSV!. Hoping that’s it for the season. I hope you feel better.

Who loves Monterey? Me! Been there twice, on our honeymoon and a few years ago when I ran Big Sur. It’s the pretty place in the world. I have not heard about that show Animal Kingdom. Is it good?

Funny about the blue heron–those animals sure learn how to adapt, don’t they? It’s why we are overrun by Canadian Geese–they love all the manmade ponds we have here.

Everyone in my house and at work have been sick. Thought I was going to get away without catching it. We have the children’s hospital across the street but the little boogers come to us sometimes too with their RSV and bronchiolitis. Plus all the wimpy adults with their runny noses…ugh.
I’ve done the Monterey Half and was just talking with some friends about doing it again or the Big Sur marathon, but I’m not sure I want to do another full after Boston. And those hills!
You should check out Animal Kingdom. I came across it while wrapping Christmas presents.
My daughter’s boyfriend wanted to scare the heron away with a b-b gun but I don’t want to hurt him (plus I’m sure that’s against the law) I just want it to go home. We’re 4 miles as the crow flies from a wetland preserve, so he’s a little ways from home.

The Oceanside Pier brings back fond memories I have of doing a 16 mile training run there. We were staying in Oceanside and taking the kids to Disneyland (that’s how long ago it was). I got up early and banged out my run and it was so nice I remember it to this day! So sorry the blue heron pillaged your pond! We have a wild bird rookery about a mile from here so I see all sorts of birds fishing in the pond behind us. Hope you’re feeling better!

I do a 50 mile Bike The Coast ride almost every year that starts in Oceanside and rides through all the coastal towns then along the coast. It’s such a great area.
I’m feeling much better today. Thanks Marcia!

Nature can be so cruel! Poor fishies.

I hope you’re feeling better by now. I’m with you on resting out a cold, I rarely get them but when I do, it means I’m super run down & need that rest. It’s been a really long time since I’ve had a true rest day and I’m definitely feeling that.

    • Denise | 9th Jan 20

I rarely get sick too but I wasn’t so lucky this time. I am better, thanks! Hope you get a rest day soon. Obviously you are aware of the importance of taking care of yourself.

I am definitely aware of the need for rest — I have been resting more the last few days, although I know I could use even more — there’s always so much to do it’s hard, but I know you either rest before — or you’re probably forced to rest even longer if you ignore it and try to push through.
