Summer running is hard. It’s right up there with running in the wind, up hill…both ways. Hahaha. Seriously though, running in the heat can be so draining, even for those runners who like the heat.
There are a few things you can do to motivate you through the summer so you will be ready for those Fall races that we all love.
This seems quite obvious. We all know that we need to get out early in order to beat the heat but I’m talking about putting your run on your calendar and setting an alarm. This mentally prepares you to get up and get going. Take it a step further and have all your stuff ready so you can get out the door without delay. I am easily side tracked, especially when I have to do something that I don’t really want to do. Stay focused. 😉
If it’s going to 85 degrees by 0700 on Sunday maybe that’s not the day to do your long run. You can do a shorter run or an indoor workout instead. Save the long run for a cooler day if possible. If there are no cooler days in the forecast then refer to tip #1 and bring plenty of water. If it cools down at night maybe a night run is an option. I personally am a morning or nothing runner, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
Misery loves company so get a friend to run with you. Not only will you now be committed to to another person but said person will be a distraction from the heat. (Providing he/she/you are not complaining about the heat the entire time. I once told my daughter that there is no complaining in running, just positive words.)
I once wore compression socks for a Hot n’ Hilly 10k in the middle of summer and I literally wanted to stop and take them off. I felt like they were suffocating me. The next Hot n’ Hilly 10k I wore a chilled neck gator and that was a life saver! I had dipped my neck gator in cold water before the start and it kept me cool the entire race. I also like cooling sleeves. They keep the sun off my arms and feel cool too. Other things to wear on hot sunny days are a hat (preferably white to reflect the sun), sunglasses and sunscreen. I’ve heard of runners wetting their hats with cold water but I haven’t tried that.
A new top or shorts, even socks, can motivate you to get up and out the door. It does me. 😉

getting up earlier does help but I sure struggle quite a bit with the summer heat!
Denise | 29th Jun 22
Summer is definitely a struggle.

Well, I live in Florida so if I don’t embrace running in the heat, I wouldn’t be able to run at all. I guess the good thing is the temperature stays the same all summer (hot and humid). There’s no back and forth, so we get acclimated to it pretty quickly. I know some people don’t like this, but when it’s really hot I like to run in just shorts and a sports bra- it really makes a difference for me. A cropped tank is okay too- i just don’t like anything against my stomach when it’s super hot out.
Denise | 29th Jun 22
I am way past the sports bra running days but you still many years left to run in minimal clothes. 🙂

I get out there a lot earlier in the summer than i do in the winter! I’m not a fan of the heat, but i’ve kind of learned how to manage it. The trails are definitely a help–we have so much shade that it makes a big difference. And i always carry water in the summer!
Denise | 29th Jun 22
I would love to have all those trees. But do you have bugs on those trails? Gnats make me crazy!

Getting my run one first thing in the morning is key for me. There is nothing like that sense of accomplishment you feel when your run is done before 7am
Denise | 29th Jun 22
I agree. I’m always happy when I get my run done early.
Zenaida Arroyo | 28th Jun 22
I also get up early and get out before it gets too hot. I like that my run is done and I can get on with my day. Summer running is not my favorite that I do what I can.
Denise | 29th Jun 22
I don’t always get out as early as I should but I try.

Yes to everything you mentioned. I don’t usually bring along water or electrolytes on my runs, but I sometimes do (on especially hot days) this time of year.
Denise | 29th Jun 22
I bring water if I do more than 6 miles or if have Luna and it’s hot, I bring water for her.

I have a fall marathon to work for so that keeps me motivated to train during the summer. I also like to get up early and do my run longs in the forest. It’s amazing how much cooler it is under the shady trees!
Denise | 29th Jun 22
I don’t have a lot of shady trails near me but that would be great!
Darlene | 29th Jun 22
Definitely plan a run with a friend. You have to show up.
Register for a race or three. Then you need to do your runs.
And the tips you mentioned. Run early or late. Find a shady route.
Run slower. Walk more often.
Denise | 29th Jun 22
I always pick the shadiest route on hot days. And running slower is inevitable for me when it’s hot. 🙂

Summer running and I are not friends (lol) but when I was training I would always try to get out as early as possible to beat the heat.
Denise | 29th Jun 22
I trained in the summer for my BQ marathon and it was the hardest thing I have ever done.
Chocolaterunsjudy | 29th Jun 22
I haven’t gotten my chilling neck gaitor out yet, but I think it’ll be coming out soon. Like Friday!
The biggest struggle for me is getting out early enough! As time goes on it seems I less & less likely to get out there as early as I should.
One of my other biggest tips is to freeze water in half your water bottle and then top off with cold water the morning of the run. You can even put it in a chill pack so it’s really cold when you get there!
We’ve been luck with not too much humidity yet. Early days though!
Denise | 29th Jun 22
Yes, I have froze my water bottles before. If I drive somewhere I make sure I have cold water waiting for me in the car. Sometimes that’s all I can think about at the end of my run.
Chocolaterunsjudy | 30th Jun 22
Oddly enough, I usually have some tea waiting for me at the end of my run! I do have to pull out that chilling gaitor soon!
Lisa | 30th Jun 22
Getting out there early definitely helps! And I agree its important to wear clothes you will be comfortable in. No compressions socks in the summer for me either!

Great tips! I’ve never used cooling sleeves and the wet gaitor sounds like a great idea. Summer’s just getting started and it already feels like it’s going to be a very hot one this year…

It has to get done, so I just get out there and do it. I have found that by going out super early, I avoid the most unpleasant parts of the heat.
