Runfessions: May edition

Is it really the end of May already? This month just flew by…as most months seem to do lately. I guess that’s a reminder to live each day fully. It is time to runfess with Marcia and the rest of the gang so we can start a new month on fresh soles.

I runfess that I signed up for the OC Half marathon in November. Yeah, I know, I said I was done with long distances but is 13.1 miles really that long? Well if I’m going to runfess I should runfess that I am now registered for 2 half’s because I registered for the Cottonwood Half in April 2022 also. “Hi, my name is Denise and I’m an addict” 😉

I’m feeling better already.

And I get this great pullover!

The last time I ran this half my phone died at mile 10 so I had to finish without my music, I got a migraine somewhere in the middle of the run and I couldn’t find my car at the end (or my friends because my phone was dead) and had to walk through 2 parking lots until I got to my car. Ugh! Hopefully this time will be better!

I runfess that I have wanted to join a running club for a long time but it was put on hold in 2020 for obvious reasons. I admit/runfess that I was nervous about running with a group (being the introvert that I am) but sometimes it’s good to do things that make you a little uncomfortable. I ran my first run with AREC (A Running Experience Club) on Wednesday and while I ended up running alone I still had a good time and met a few people when we finished. Hopefully I can hook up with someone on the next run.

And lastly, can I just say that I love summer as much as the next person, but must runfess that I am not ready for the summer heat yet. We have had some nice cool temps here in So Cal with a couple of (too) hot days in between but I know the heat is coming and I’m not ready.  Summer running means getting out early to beat the heat and I runfess, I struggle with getting out early.

That’s all I got. How about you? Anything you want to runfess? Have you signed up for any races? Do you get nervous being the newbie in a group? Summer running…yay or nay?

Thanks for reading.

Yup. group runs are hard when you don’t know anyone. Luckily I find runners are super friendly.

I am an addict too (I ran 9 halfs last year).

I am only signed up for one in Oct. I ran one in Feb and one in April already. Stay turned, I’m sure there will be more.

9 halfs in 2020? Were they all virtual? That’s a lot either way.
The runners were really friendly and supportive. I met a woman that is probably my age and i think my pace so maybe we’ll run together next week.

      • Darlene | 28th May 21

3 were live. The rest virtual unfortunately.

I hope your running group works out well.

I hope you end up loving the running group! I’m kind of surprised nobody ran with you your first time but whatever. We are sooo cold here today it’s ridiculous. The high was 45 with gale force winds and driving rain. On days like these summer can show up anytime and I will not complain.

    • Denise | 28th May 21

Oh my, 45 degrees going into June is a bummer. I too would be welcoming summer.

Group runs are the best! I have met some of my best friends from my running group. I am not ready for summer humidity and heat yet either but I am determined to power through it this summer! I have heard that is a fun half- and you get the hoodie 🙂

    • Denise | 28th May 21

Your group runs always look like fun. We don’t have the same humidity that you do but we have at least one heatwave every year.
Yeah I get the hoodie and the registration fee wasn’t too much either.

Wow, the swag for the OC Half is really cool! I love when races offer something besides the basic race t-shirt.

Group runs can be great! Hopefully next time you’ll be able to run with someone on the next run. I agree with Deborah that I’ve met some great people by joining group runs, especially when we had a Fleet Feet store in my city.

    • Denise | 29th May 21

Me too regarding the swag. I hope that pull over fits, sometimes they run small.
I’m hoping to meet some great people too.

The OC half always has good swag! If I was close by, I’d run it. i’ve got 2 halfs on my calendar for fall and they are both on trail! Yassss

    • Denise | 29th May 21

Come to the OC and run with me!

It got hot here fast, and then cooled off. It made me realize how tough its going to be to acclimate once it finally warms up for good!

    • Denise | 29th May 21

We’ve only had a couple hot days and I was at work on those days…phew. Running in the heat is hard.

Oh that OC swag!!!! Well, you asked about summer running, and I runfess (though I’m not the least bit ashamed LOL) that summer running is my favorite. You probably already knew that, though. I have a 20K at the end of August, my marathon mid-September, then another 13.1 mid-October. I’m excited to be back in the racing element!

    • Denise | 29th May 21

I know you like the warm weather. A 20k at the end of August could potentially be an hot one.

Ha! I think I am an addict too, Denise. I signed up for the London Marathon on October, then I also registered for a half marathon in California in November. It just feels so good to be racing again! And traveling. I hope your running club turns out to be good. I love the friendships I have made though our local club.

    • Denise | 29th May 21

That London marathon sounds awesome! November is a great time to run in California.

That’s okay Denise, you’re talking to an audience of fellow addicts! Nice job on finding a running group! I want to hear more about it- maybe it will motivate me to do the same.
I’m an early morning runner, but I can also relate to the kitten under the blankets- that’s how I feel when I’m trying to wake up from a nap!

I am a slower runner. Like 11 mm could be my race pace (depends on the distance and the weather). So groups can be hard. I’ve been in a few groups that I enjoyed, and others where I was always alone and not so much fun.

Hopefully these next halfs will be MUCH better than that last one!

Our weather has been truly bipolar. 90 on Wednesday, highs of 50 all weekend long (with rain, too!).

Where in SoCal are you? My brother lives in Irvine. Not that we get there much.

    • Denise | 29th May 21

When I ran with Team In Training I always had a few people I could run with. I would think there are runners of all paces in this group, I just have to figure out who is who.

Yeah that last OC half was a mess.
I live about 15 mins from Irvine. That’s where I run my favorite trail, Shady Canyon. It gets pretty hot in Irvine. I live in West Garden Grove close to Seal Beach. If you come out here I’d love to meet up. 😊

      • Chocolaterunsjudy | 29th May 21

That would be awesome, although usually when we’re in Irvine we’re not driving (much, anyway). Those CA freeways are intimidating. I think the last time we were there was 5 years ago. Usually my brother comes back east so he can see my mom.

We actually had a plan to get her out there last year, but you know what happened. She can’t make that trip anymore.

I wish I’d known about the trail last time I was there! I ended up just running from the hotel we were at. It was not exciting.

I’ve got two races in November, but nothing until them. I am always uncomfortable the first time going to a group event. Hopefully it will be a good time!

    • Denise | 1st Jun 21

I’m running again with them this Wednesday, hopefully someone will run with me. 😉
November seems to be a popular race month.

Glad you found a group to run with but what a bummer that you ended up running alone. Hopefully next time someone will be there with you. We’re having some weird weather here. Hot and humid and then cold and rainy with high winds. My plan is to be up really early to get out there to beat the heat.

    • Denise | 30th May 21

It’s all good. I’m sure I’ll find someone to run with.
Our weather has been mostly chilly which is great for running.
