Weekly “Wrapped-Up”

Welcome to the Weekly Wrap link-up hosted by Holly and Wendy. Take a little time to visit them as well as some others in the link-up and share the love. β™₯

weekly wrap

So much and yet so little has happened since my last weekly wrap. I’ve been keeping things on the down low. Partly because my Mom always said, “If you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all” and partly because I’ve been pouting, feeling a little sorry for myself and I didn’t want to share negativity. But I’ll get to that…

Let’s start on a positive note…I went on an eight day Alaskan cruise, and Alaska is beautiful. I saw eagles, whales and almost a bear. We just missed the bear, but did see the trees swaying where he re-entered the brush. I really, really wanted to see a bear butknow he was there.

As I go through all the pictures and realize all that we did, I decided I’m going to save my Alaskan trip for another post. What I will say is I don’t think I am “cruise” vacationer if that makes any sense. While the cruise and all it’s staff were amazing, I prefer to be out and about rather than playing trivia, eating and drinking all day. To each his own, as they say.

A picture of whales feeding by scooping up fish. Called bubble net feeding.

Now let’s talk about running and my marathon training…ugh.

As you can probably guess I didn’t get a whole lot of running in on the cruise. On the first day I headed to the gym to run on the dreaded treadmill. The place was packed! I was shocked. Who were these people? Seriously! I have never worked out at a gym on vacation before, I tend to head outside for a run. I only waited a few minutes for a treadmill then sucked it up and got on. I have never ran (run?) on a treadmill before so I felt a little awkward (besides having the ship swaying) but I got through 4 long agonizing miles (and missed a whale while I was running too). I ran 2 other days, a 6 miler and a 3 miler and that’s all I could make myself do. The only good, was that my pace was 9:10. I think it helps having the ground moving. I have no proof because I felt weird taking a selfie so you’ll have to trust me on this.

I spent much of my vacation worrying about training…or lack there of… πŸ™

When I got home I did a couple easy runs, 5 miles, then an (accidentally) short track workout (I only did half the workout because I read the schedule wrong… oops). I did a long run with fast middle miles, which turned out to be end miles because my legs were too tired to do the 5 easy finishing miles. Do you see where this is going?

That was Friday the 3rd, then I worked the weekend and hit the track on Monday. One mile warm up, 8 x 800’s with a recovery 400 after each, then a mile cool down. My achilles was a little sore but otherwise I felt strong…until that afternoon. My achilles was so sore and swollen I could hardly walk. Mind you, I had to put on heels to attend a funeral right after running, so I blame the heels. πŸ˜‰

Tuesday I couldn’t run, so I did what any runner training for the most important marathon of her life would do, I worried and pouted all day.

when injured
Why me?

Wednesday and Thursday were a little less pouty but I still couldn’t run. I could hardly walk. I decided to get over it and attempt to stay strong by doing some squats, planks and weights. I didn’t take any pictures or post anything on social media because I preferred to keep it quiet and suffer in silence. Maybe if I don’t talk about it, it would go away. Don’t make eye contact. LOL

Friday, Saturday and Sunday consisted of Ibuprofen and my achilles wrapped in ice, and trying to lay low while still living life. I can’t remember ever going this long without running and it’s been a struggle. I seriously don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t run anymore. Anyone else feel the same?

injury
Just saying…

I’m hoping Monday brings a healed achilles and I can run an easy 4 (or 6) miles. I feel better just sharing this with runners who will understand my struggle.

Thanks for listening!

Have you struggled with an injury before? How did you handle it?

Have you ever been on a cruise? For it or against it?

Thanks for reading!

Keep running!

Ah, the most important marathon of your life. That would have been Big Sur for me and yep, PF decided to set up shop in my foot and wouldn’t leave. My sports medicine physician promised to get me to the start line but there wasn’t a whole lot of running. It was all about staying in shape. Hang in there!

Thanks. I’ve never had an injury before, but I’ve never trained this hard either. And like my husband keeps reminding me, I’m a lot older now. :-/
I ran Big Sur Half quite a few years ago and it was beautiful. I’m glad you got to go even if it meant doing some walking. πŸ™‚

So I currently have an achilles injury as well but I can still run short and slow while I am healing it. It is not fun I feel you. As for the cruise, sorry to hear you did not enjoy it. You did 3 runs while away so I would say you really did not lose much training. This too shall pass!

I’ve been running through minor PF pain for a while now so I guess it was inevitable. I hope yours doesn’t get any worse.
About the cruise, I did enjoy it, especially the excursions, but a cruise won’t be my first choice next time.

I can relate to the not running thing (I had a forced 3-month sabbatical last summer due to an emergency surgery). Fortunately, although I was not able to run (via my surgeon’s specific instructions), I was able to walk and do pretty much anything else that didn’t involve kneeling, deep squats, or water. It was tough seeing everyone else out in the sunshine, but I did what I could do and made the best of my recovery πŸ˜‰ Hang in there, this is just a temporary detour πŸ˜‰

Thanks for the encouragement! Sorry about your surgery. It looks like everything went well and you managed to stay fit. Great attitude!

Hang in there Denise! It seems like injuries are part of the process once you start really pushing yourself. I don’t think I have heard of any successful runners who have NOT had an injury. Let your body heal and repair itself.
I have heard conflicting things about using ice and NSAIDS for injuries. Google it! Haha. If you aren’t able to qualify this time I will try with you next time!

Thanks Melinda. I will hold you to trying for Boston with me. πŸ™‚
My coach sent me a video link of a sports medicine Dr. talking about Achilles tendonitis. His advice was ice, rest and Ibuprofen. So that’s what I’ve been doing. I ran 4 miles today with very mild discomfort.

This is the doctor that created the “RICE” treatment. Very interesting- he is now saying that the Rest and Ice doesn’t work. Sounds like there is a lot of conflicting opinions but what he is saying kind of makes sense to me. If you are doing anything that prevents the body from going through its natural inflammatory process to then how is your body going to heal itself? Just think about it!

I hope your Achilles is feeling better asap. I had an Achilles injury a few years ago and it sidelined my marathon training. It hurt like no other. Even walking hurt. Take care of yourself and you’ll be good to go soon enough.

Thanks Melinda. The video I watched also mentioned how the Achilles’ tendon has very little blood flow, needed for healing, so it would make sense that ice could hinder healing. I’ve been thinking of using a warm pack to increase blood flow.

…Don’t make eye contact… LOL I do the same suffering in silence thing when injured. I had an Achilles issue for a long, long time. I iced it so much, I firmly believe I caused nerve damage. Returning to a shoe with a 10mm drop and putting an extra lift in the heel of the shoe (the back 1/3 of an old running shoe’s insert) helped me the most. I definitely needed all the lift I could get. Just throwing that out there…you never know. Good luck. Thanks for linking!

I just read an article about ice causing nerve damage and/or delayed healing. You might want to check out the link my friend Melinda shared in her comment. It makes sense.
I’ve been wearing heal inserts for PF that has bugged me on and off for months. I think I was wearing old shoes when I aggravated my Achilles.
Thanks for you advice and support!
