Trail Running: What I Like About You

Trail running is generally something you love or you don’t. I love trail running even though I’m a frequent faller I still will take the chance and choose trails over streets. I have a good variety of trails to choose from that are a 15 – 20 minute drive but I’ve driven 45 mins to an hour to run specific trails that I love.  Sure running on my neighborhood streets is easier and more convenient but trails are my favorite. Let me explain..

5 Things I love about trail running:

»Nature

I’m pretty sure this is every trail runners’ number one. I love being one with nature. (Sometimes a little too much when I splat in the dirt. 😉 ) Being outdoors in the fresh air with the sun shining and birds singing…aaahhh. It’s love.

»Wildlife

My goal whenever I’m in nature is to hopefully see wildlife. I know, I just did a blog post about what to do when you encounter wildlife, but I’m talking about bunnies and deer, not mountain lions. But wouldn’t it be a great story if you saw a mountain lion…and lived to talk about it. 🙂

A roadrunner on the trail. The irony.

»The Challenge

Trail running is a challenge. There are hills, rocks, sand, mud, sticks, logs and streams, and you must navigate around and over all of them.  It challenges you physically and mentally. Fun!

Cardiac Hill…a definite challenge!

»Improves Strength, Balance and Concentration

All that stuff previously mentioned…gives you strength. Strength for your everyday runs, your long run and your (someday) races. No zoning out on theses runs. Concentration and balance are a must.

»Walk Breaks

Most trails have hills or other obstacles that require slowing down or walking. I’ll take that break. It might not always feel like a break because it’s disguised as a challenge but I look at it as a break from running… and I’m still outside, moving forward.

How about you, do you love trail running? Or do you prefer road running?

I’m linking with Debbie, Deborah, Jen, Laura and Lisa for Runner’s Roundup. Thanks ladies for link up!

Thanks for reading and keep running!

I haven’t run enough trails to be able to say if I love them or not. I usually stick to running around my neighborhood because its convenient. I do wish I had more trails nearby though!

It’s definitely more convenient for me too. I wish I had a trail in my backyard.

I love trails. But so far I’m afraid to race on them. I’m a klutz.

Maybe I will try at some point

The good thing about trails is that walking/hiking is just as good as running them.

I prefer the road, but it’s really all I know. I have done some trail races, though, and I have LOVED them. I think the trails (or at least the ones I’ve been on) are great for all the challenges of the terrain…nothing flat, lots of tree roots and/or rocks to navigate, steep hills to climb (and descend, preferable without falling or slipping) and all.the.nature.

    • Denise | 14th Apr 21

Those tree roots can be dangerous. But I’ve tripped over nothing so what do I know. Lol.

I have just come back from a spin on the trails!
It was wonderful but quite technical and I had a hard time keeping up with the other runners.
My trails here in South Africa look similar to yours! 😊

    • Denise | 15th Apr 21

Except we probably don’t see the same wildlife. 😉 I hope to visit South Africa someday.

Right there with you, Denise! It’s amazing to me how different your trails are from mine. I think that is just another cool thing about trail running–it’s never the same!

    • Denise | 15th Apr 21

I hope to someday explore your trails.

I’ve been LOVING my trail runs lately. I agree with everything you said- the only thing is, our trails aren’t hilly. I wish they were! Love the picture of the road runner, ha ha!

    • Denise | 15th Apr 21

Yeah, almost all our trails are hilly. I did a trail run series one summer that was called “Hot and Hilly”. The name was on point! Lol

I am that rare runner that’s in between on trails. Most of our trails are highly technical (very rocky, lots of tree roots), and sometimes that challenge is nice — and sometimes not. Last year I found a trail system that is a lot easier!

I still run on road a lot though. I try to keep in about one trail a week (not in winter), but some weeks that doesn’t happen.

Most of my races were road races, but I have done a few trail races, too. I do think it’s good for our bodies — and maybe our spirit too.

    • Denise | 15th Apr 21

I agree that it’s good for both body and spirit.
I just walk if things get too technical.

      • Chocolaterunsjudy | 15th Apr 21

Oh yes, a lot of walking!

I need to get my running shoes on some trails sometime soon so I can start practicing for my California adventure. Not sure how I feel about the wildlife!

    • Denise | 15th Apr 21

Mountain lion attacks or even sightings are very rare. It’s all good. 😉

Once I stopped caring about my pace, I started LOVING trails! Now close to 100% of my run are on trails. I find them much more relaxing, and yes, you need to be in the moment to navigate them. I’m very blessed to have trails right out my back door.

    • Denise | 16th Apr 21

I would LOVE to have trails out my back door! I always love your IG pics.

I do mostly road running, but I used to love trails when I lived in the Pacific Northwest. My favorite are smooth dirt/gravel trails.

    • Denise | 19th Apr 21

I prefer smooth trails too, less chance or falling. 😁
