5 Tips to Improve Your Running Form

  1. Don’t run too fast or too slow. Ideally you should have 180 foot strikes per minute. This will require a little math while running…sorry. 😉 Count foot strikes for 15 seconds (should be around 45) and multiply by 4.
  2. Don’t land on your heels. Landing on your heels requires more energy to move forward.  You should land on your mid-foot.
  3. Stretch. Stretching improves flexibility which helps lengthen muscles and prevent injuries. Do a light stretch/warm-up before and a more thorough stretch after. For some simple stretches click here.
  4. Stand tall. Have your back straight and lean slightly forward. When I get tired I have to remind myself to stand tall. It’s easy to slouch when you’re tired, but it actually feels better when your back is straight.
  5. Relax. Relax you head, face, neck and shoulders. Keep your arms close to your body at a 90° angle and swing. Try to avoid too much back swing and keep your hands relaxed.

Running can be hard enough, but by following these tips to improve your form you will run more efficiently, thus conserving energy. Yay!

Do you have to remind yourself to relax or stand tall like me?

I wrote a similar post earlier this year–I think taking a video of yourself running so you can actually see your form is helpful too. I think a lot of people don’t have a clue what they look like when they are running!

How have I not read your blog before? I’m so glad you commented on mine!

Thanks for the input! I totally agree. I have been thinking about putting videos in my posts, I just need to recruit one of my kids to help me.
