Should you stretch before or after (or both) a run?

So many runners ask the questions: “When should I stretch?” or “Do I even need to stretch?”.

When I trained for my first marathon with Team in Training my coach told us that some very light stretching before our run was okay but our first mile was always considered out warm up.

Warming up the muscles before a run helps prevent injuries. This can consist of just walking around the house making your coffee, feeding the cat, throwing a load of laundry in, whatever, you are just waking up the body. I never get right out of bed and head out the door. I need to wake up first. Everyone is different. Maybe you don’t have time to lounge around for an hour before running like I do (my husband calls me the Queen) but you still need to wake up your muscles. This is when you need to do some light stretches. Try the stretches pictured below to warm up.

Stretches

I have never been big into stretching and I have never had an injury. I know when my body needs stretching and I do it then. My hip flexors are always tight and I can’t touch my toes, but nothing hurts either. Remember, I am not a coach, I do what feels good and what works for me. You should do the same. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask. I will always help you find answers.

More info at Active.com for when and how to stretch. Runner’s World also has great information on all things running. I subscribe to Runner’s World because it motivates me and I love reading the inspiring articles. I recommend it to all runners. If you work with me, no need, I usually bring in my old copies.

Thanks for reading!

Keep running people!
