First tip for the new runner

Running has multiple benefits. It strengthens your heart and lungs. It can be the fastest weight loss exercise. It relieves stress. I could go on and on about the benefits of running but let’s talk harsh reality…Running Is Hard…but it is worth it.

My best advice for the new runner is to just keep at it. The most common complaint I hear from new runners is “I can’t breathe!”.  I have been running for over 30 years and sometimes I can’t breathe either. It will always be hard at times but it does get easier.

So if you are just starting out I suggest that you start with 1 mile. If you are running outside (which I highly recommend), drive 1/2 mile from home so you will know your turn around point (while you’re out there find the 1 mile turn around also because you’ll need that sooner than you think 🙂 ). If you are more than a little overweight please check with your family doctor before starting a new exercise program.

Start off slow. The goal here is to finish 1 mile. Walk breaks are okay, soon you will be running a whole mile without walking.

If 1 mile seems too easy feel free to increase your mileage to your own comfort level. But remember it is better to build slowly to avoid injuries. Depending on your base fitness level you can increase by 1 mile every 2 – 4 wks until you have reached your end goal. (5k, 10k, half marathon, marathon)  We will talk about training for races at a later time, baby steps…
