Coffee Talk: July Edition

Good morning everyone! It’s time to share some thoughts over coffee with my virtual friends across the country. I’m having my usual French roast with a scoop of collagen (not my usual stuff but we’ll talk about that in a minute). Join the chat and link up with Deborah and Coco for The Ultimate Coffee Date.

So it’s 4th of July and the country is more divided than ever. Over coffee I would tell you how much I want everyone to settle down. Just be kind to one another and treat others as you would want them to treat you. That’s how I was taught. Why is that so hard? My husband and daughter said to me last night that people don’t want to celebrate the 4th. Okay? My first thought was GOOD, people need to stay home. But they meant because they (not us)  hate America right now. Then be the change!

If we were having coffee I would have to bring up the pandemic…sorry. It is out of control here in Southern California. I don’t know why it is such a big deal to wear a mask. Maybe if we told people not to wear a mask, they would be like “You can’t tell me what to do! I’m going to wear a mask.” Seriously, it’s like that. We are so busy at the hospital (when things should be slowing down) , Covid patients everywhere. I had a woman checking-in her dad for a non-covid problem yesterday, and she was contemplating going to a different hospital because there were “so many people”. I told other hospitals are just as busy. She then said “Why are you so busy?” I told her there’s a pandemic. Seriously lady?  Anyhow, just wear your mask, wash your hands and social distance. Words to literally live by.

On to better topics. Over coffee I would tell you that our new kitty is a hellion. She is not the sweet. lovable cat Oliver was. While she has her moments (when she’s sleeping) she mostly runs around like a spaz or hides and ambushes you when walking by. Most of the time her attacks are harmless but we all have at least one scratch from the little maniac. The other day she let me pet her for 5 full minutes for the first time ever. Hopefully it was a sign of better things to come. Fingers crossed.

Biting Luna’s face.

Lastly, over coffee I would tell you that I rarely switch brands on products that I like. (i.e. I like Skippy, I will never choose Jif) Having said that, for some reason I decided to change collagen powders from GLG to Live Well. Bad decision. This other collagen does not mix well. It separates in my coffee and looks gross. I’ll be switching back to GLG probably before this one is gone.

And…without realizing it was the same brand, I ordered their (Live Well) green powder because it had a great rating and my Athletic Greens is sooo expensive. Well, if green had a taste (and it does) it would be this drink. It tastes like I am drinking hay or grass. It’s awful. I’m back to Athletic Greens. I don’t think any green drink tastes great, but I was able to get used to this one in a week. I mix it with 4 oz natural apple juice and 4 oz water, just in case you want to give it a try. Go to www.athleticgreens.com/hurdle for 20 free travel packs with first purchase. I’m not promoting just passing it along.

And my husband wonders why I don’t like change. Stick with what works is my motto. ๐Ÿ™‚

So that’s all I have for now. I’ll continue to run, walk and ride my bike, and try to stay sane through all this mess. I hope you do the same.

Because I love Sheldon.

Thanks for reading!

Kittens are like that. They can definitely change — a lot — when they are mature.

They were actually pointing out that with younger people telling them they don’t need to wear masks would probably work. No joke. What’s going on in the country is scary. We’re still on the decline here in NY, but I fear that people are just a little too comfortable with that.

I love my country, warts & all. Let’s just not talk about Trump. ๐Ÿ™

    • Denise | 5th Jul 20

Not too surprised that telling young people not to wear masks would work.
I’m sure that’s what happened here…people got too comfortable and starting acting like the virus just disappeared.
I love my country too. It’s so upsetting to watch people be so disrespectful.

I still think we have the best country despite our current issues. I am sure it’s really crazy at the hospital. Thanks for being there and helping people when they need it most. Can’t wait for real in person coffee dates again. Stay well and thanks for linking up

We do have the best country. We weren’t very busy until the past 2 or 3 wks. I’m pretty sure it’s related to the protests and opening things up again. While some people are really sick, most have mild symptoms, but there are a lot of them.

LOL on your kitten. And on Skippy. We are a Jif family, but my husband has had to make do with Skippy b/c thatโ€™s all that was left in the early days of empty grocery store shelves. Tonight they interviewed a woman going to the fireworks without a mask. She said she wasnโ€™t worried about getting it. I guess she didnโ€™t get the message that itโ€™s not about her … I hope you and your family stay healthy.

    • Denise | 5th Jul 20

I love how you say “make do with Skippy”. Lol. Honestly I like all peanut butter, but I prefer Skippy. ๐Ÿ˜‰
Yeah, people don’t get how it’s about keeping others safe. Did you read about the guy who tested positive, went to a party and another party goer got sick and died. The guy that tested positive said he didn’t think he could give it to anyone. Seriously? Where have you been?

Yes Yes Yes…we all need to be kind. I am so frustrated with the rudeness on social media. Everyone needs to step down from their soapboxes and just extend kindness and tolerance to one another. I seldom leave comments on any “hot” topic because I know there’s a troll just waiting to swoop down on me LOL I’ve been trying a new collagen powder as well…it tastes the same as GLG (which did have a distinct odd flavor to me), but this other powder doesn’t dissolve as well. UGH. It was a lot cheaper, though…..

    • Denise | 5th Jul 20

I’ve made the mistake of commenting on “hot” topics and regretted it. I’ve learned my lesson.
I never really noticed a flavor to GLG but I put it in my coffee with flavored almond milk so maybe it disguises it.

“Why are you so busy?” HAHAHA! Some people live in a very strange bubble.
It must be very frustrating to work in a hospital right now. You’re working your feet off just because people are careless and entitled.

I put collagen in green tea every morning and I hate it. I hate green tea and I hate collagen. The things we do to be healthy, *sigh*.

    • Denise | 5th Jul 20

LOL. That’s so funny that you hate both, yet you still drink it. It is crazy what we do. I’m telling you, I don’t look forward to my green juice either.

I agree with you in the mask-wearing thing. Just do it!!! Love your neighbor and all that good stuff. Keeping active has kept me sane during the pandemic too. What would I do if I couldn’t run? I don’t want to find out. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Denise | 5th Jul 20

I know, right? What would we do if we couldn’t run? We still have people showing up in the ED without a mask. You would think that would be the one place you would absolutely wear a mask. (eyeroll)

  7. Debbie @ Deb Runs | 5th Jul 20

I remember those attacks from behind and wild, not so cuddly, kittens. Those two kittens turned into lap cats who wanted all the love all the time!

    Stay safe!

    • Denise | 5th Jul 20

Well that’s encouraging! Hopefully she will get more lovable as she gets older.

  8. Marcia | 5th Jul 20

I guess we’re lucky that everyone around here is very conscientious about wearing masks. I rarely if ever see someone without. The whole hatred of our country thing makes me sad. Maybe I’m showing my age here but where is the respect? Is violence and vandalism the best way to get one’s point across?? I hope your kitty grows up a bit and mellows out. I runfess I switched from GLG to Now Foods collagen and it is every bit as good. If you want to try it lmk and I can give you a discount code.

    • Denise | 5th Jul 20

I hope that’s not an age thing because I agree. Where is the respect?!
I think it’s hard because our other kitten was the most mellow kitten ever and then we got the Tazmanian devil. I’ll take that discount since I haven’t ordered any GLG yet. Thanks Marcia!

Everything really is a mess right now! We’ve been doing pretty well with our numbers here in Maryland…for now. I feel like its only a matter of time before people get annoyed with wearing masks and social distancing. That’s crazy that the one lady had to ask why you were busy at the hospital!

    • Denise | 5th Jul 20

We were doing fine until the protests and the opening up of some businesses. I think people got too comfortable and let their guard down.

  10. runswithpugs | 5th Jul 20

Aw! My Luna is a total savage, too, except in puppy form. She actually snoozed on my lap all cuddled up today, and it was so perfect, compared to her usual piranha puppy antics.

I didn’t want to celebrate. It’s not because I hate America, but because it didn’t feel right with so much suffering, anger, and sadness in our country right now. It’s hard for me to feel festive when people are hurting so badly. There’s always hope, though. I do believe tthat.

    • Denise | 6th Jul 20

I get where you’re coming from but we do live in the best country in the world and I think we need to celebrate freedom…every American’s freedom. But again, I do understand how you feel. It is definitely taking a toll on people.
On a lighter note…puppies are the best! ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Wendy | 6th Jul 20

I’m having trouble understanding the not wanting to wear a mask thing…it’s about keeping everyone safe and protecting the vulnerable. It’s not political and it’s sure not about constitutional rights. We are really seeing people for how they are. It’s sad. Many of my friends that I grew up with are stuck in that small town conservative mindset. I’m so sad about it. I wonder why they don’t protest wearing seatbelts too?

    • Denise | 6th Jul 20

They probably did in the very beginning. ๐Ÿ˜‰
I just left the grocery store where everyone is wearing a mask but so many had it under their nose. And many of them were elderly people who are high risk. It took some restraint to not tell them to cover their damn noses! But you know they would say they can’t breathe. Ugh!

  12. Darlene | 23rd Jul 20

In NYS I see almost everyone wearing a mask. Maybe that’s why we are going so well compared to other states.

    Stay well, my friend!!

    • Denise | 24th Jul 20

Everyone is wearing masks in the stores but I think people are having social gatherings and not being careful.

      • Darlene | 24th Jul 20

True. We had one recently with young people. 33 tested positive from that party.

        • Denise | 24th Jul 20

Wow, that’s a lot. I hope they all remain asymptomatic.
